Muharram: Facts And Misconceptions

Facts About Muharram

Muharram is one of the four sacred Months out of twelve. The other being ZiQad, ZilHajj and Rajab. These four months have been sacred since the creation of universe - as told by Allah Subhana Wa Tala in the Quran.

After Ramadan, fasting in the month of Muharram is the most reward-able.

Facts about Ashura - The 10th of Muharram

*Fasting on the 10th Muharram i.e. Ashura was obligatory on the Muslims before the fasts of Ramadan were made obligatory.

*Fasting on the 10th of Muharram expiates the sins of the previous year.
*Musa (as) and the Bani Israel were saved from the Pharaoh by the parting of the sea on 10th Muharram.

*Prophet Musa  (Alaihissalam) as a sign of gratitute to Allah used to fast on the day of Ashura and Jews did the same.

*Prophet Muhammad (sallallau alaihi wasallam) on hearing the fast of Musa (as) also ordered the Muslims to fast on this day and himself did the same.

*Prophet Muhammad (sallallau alaihi wasallam) decided to fast on 9th Muharram as well to differentiate from the Jews but he passed away before he could do so.

Misconceptions about Ashura

-This is the day Prophet Adam  (Alaihissalam) was created
-This is the day when Allah accepted the repentance of Adam  (Alaihissalam)
-This is the day when Ibrahim (Alaihissalam)  was born.
-This is the day the Qayamat (doomsday) will occur. (From hadiths we know Qayamat will occur on a Friday, but does not specify which month)
-Whoever baths of Ashura will never get ill.
-Muharram is an evil or unlucky month. (Due to  the battle of Karbala)
-Marriages should not be held in Muharram.

All of the above are misconceptions based on unauthentic traditions. This misconception can be easily removed by the fact that on the exact same day Husain (ra) was martyred, years ago Prophet Musa (Alaihissalam) as and his followers were saved from Pharaoh, which is why Prophet Muhammad (sallallau alaihi wasallam) observed the fast on Ashura and ordered the Muslims to do the same. The day can not be lucky or unlucky at the same time.

Historical Facts about Muharram

*Companion Umar Farooq (ra) succumbed to his injuries and attained Martyrdom on the 1st of Muharram, 23 AH (After Hijri)

*Grandson of Prophet Muhammad (sallallau alaihi wasallam) Hussain ibn Ali (ra) along with most of his family members was martyred in the desert of Kerbala in Iraq on the 10th of Muharram.

Authentic Ibadaat (Worship) of Muharram

*Fasting in Muharram (any day)

*Fasting on 10th Muharram and combining it with the fast of 9th Muharram to distinguish from the Jews.

Innovations and things to avoid in Muharram

*Preparing special dishes meals in Muharram.

*Holding lamentation and mourning ceremonies in the memory of martyrdom of Sayyidna Husain (ra)

*Cursing the companions.

*Wearing black clothes and starving and refusing to drink in memory of Husain (ra)

All these are deviant practices which go against the basic teachings of Qur'an and Prophet Muhammad (sallallau alaihi wasallam) He said, "He is not from our group who slaps his checks, tears his clothes and cries in the manner of the people of jahiliyyah." (Sahih Bukhari)

Sayyidna Husain (ra) before his demise advised his beloved sister Sayyidah Zainab (ra) not to mourn over his death in this manner. He said, "My dear sister! I swear upon you that in case I die you shall not tear your clothes, nor scratch your face, nor curse anyone for me or pray for your death." (Al-Kamil, ibn Kathir vol. 4 pg. 24)

Abu Ayub Ansari, a prominent companion

The Qur’an is indeed a miracle that has withstood the test of time; not a single letter in it has changed over 14 centuries. Hundreds of thousands of Muslims memorize and preserve it in their hearts. Allah, the Exalted, promised to protect and preserve it. He says, “Surely We have revealed the Reminder, and We will most surely be its Guardian.” (Qur’an, 15:9)

Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) was initially accused, by the disbelievers of Makkah, of practicing sihr (witchcraft) over the early Muslims, as the unflinching change of their hearts toward the Qur’an’s monotheistic message could not be attributed to any human cause. In the Qur’an, Almighty Allah says, “And they wonder that there has come to them a warner from among themselves, and the disbelievers say, ‘This is an enchanter, a liar’.” (Qur’an, 38:4)

It is the same today. Whenever a Muslim adheres to the Qur’an, reciting it with understanding, reading its translation or exegesis with deep reflection, or teaching it to others, he or she undergoes a real change for the better in his or her lifestyle and habits, worship, dealings with others, and best of all in his or her innate spiritual self.

Knowledge of the Qur’an improves the Muslim woman’s understanding of monotheism, the Oneness of Allah, in such a way that her Creator becomes the center of her existence. Her basic beliefs are rectified and her heart is cleansed from the impurity of shirk (polytheism), as she reads in the Qur’an, “Serve Allah, and join not any partners with Him.” (Qur’an, 4:36)

She also experiences a gradual decline in the reverence of intangible deities that her heart previously harbored, such as strong love for the world and its adornments (e.g., fashionable clothes, jewelry, shoes, interior decor, and luxuries), the human base self’s innate desires, and dependence on physical means and people (who are among Allah’s creation) in achieving ends.

Her attitude toward taharah (purity) in herself, her home, and her family also undergoes a radical change, so that she can be seen focusing more on simple, clean, clutter-free living rather than lavish opulence and exhibitionist extravagance. That is because Almighty Allah loves the repentant and the purified. He, the Exalted, says, “Surely Allah loves those who turn much (to Him), and He loves those who purify themselves.” (Qur’an, 2:222)

Knowledgeable companionship with the Glorious Qur’an removes from a Muslim woman’s life all useless pastimes, such as window shopping, buying unnecessary possessions, watching soaps or drama on television, gossiping for hours on the phone, attending extravagant parties to ascend the social ladder, showing acquired assets off, and attending gatherings of innovative religious rituals.

Eventually, the Qur’an enables her to relinquish social ills such as backbiting, mingling with members of the opposite sex, and indulging in impermissible entertainment (like films, music, dating, singing, and dancing). By refraining from all these ills, a Muslim woman will have ample time to pursue leisure-time activities and hobbies that will be more fruitful for her in the hereafter.

Most Muslim girls and women who gain knowledge of Allah’s Book eventually start teaching what they learned to others or actively start volunteering for social work on a community level (e.g., feeding the poor, paying off others’ debts, facilitating marriages, counseling those who are aggrieved, and providing the needy with work).

They also start to focus more on their family and on building its Islamic character. The major cause of this shift in focus is, as mentioned before, relinquishing mundane and time-wasting pursuits.

Modesty in dress and dealings

The more a Muslim woman studies the Qur’an, the more she becomes inclined to chastity, humbleness, and modesty. The Qur’an reconnects her to her fitrah (intrinsic human nature), and thus she starts becoming conscious of how she dresses in public, how she talks to men who are not mahrams (unmarriageable kins), and how she uses body language outside her house.

In fact, all her manners undergo a noticeable change for the better: her dressing, her tone of voice, her conversational style, her sense of humor, her gestures, and her way of talking with men all become compliant with Allah’s ordainments in the Qur’an: “And do not display your finery like the displaying of the ignorance of yore, and keep up Prayer, and pay the poor rate, and obey Allah and His Messenger.” (Qur’an, 33:33)

Deep understanding of the Qur’an leads to a high level of taqwa, which is piety, perpetual consciousness of Allah, and fear of His anger. This makes a Muslim woman extremely careful to give other people their due rights. This taqwa improves her relationships with them, making her more patient, tolerant, forgiving mistakes and shortcomings, and more kind to everyone in general.

The Qur’an makes her more zealously cherish, obey, respect, and serve her parents, especially if she is single and free from the responsibilities of marriage and motherhood. She thus helps out more with household tasks instead of always going out with friends. She gives due attention to her parents’ advice and opinions and obeys their decisions regarding her marriage proposals.

Similarly, the Qur’an reminds the married Muslim woman of the nature of her husband’s and children’s rights, which are her duties toward them. It is therefore not uncommon to see a husband (who himself might not be so practicing of the teaching of Islam beyond basic obligations) singing his wife’s praises once she starts studying the Qur’an.

This is because he strongly feels the improvement in her overall character and conduct; he notices her hard work on the moral upbringing of their children and her increased dedication to her home life. He finds a warmer, happier home and family awaiting him each evening, so he openheartedly welcomes this change, which was brought about by the Qur’an’s effect on his wife.

In the Qur’an, Almighty Allah says,

(O humankind! There has come to you a direction from your Lord and a healing for the (diseases) in your hearts and, for those who believe, a guidance and a mercy.) (Qur’an, 10:57)

Last but not least, the greatest blessing that the Qur’an gives to a Muslim woman is a heart filled with Allah’s love. This heart throbs with unadulterated faith and is free from any malice, rancor, hatred, or envy toward others; it is a heart that knows no despair of Allah’s mercy in bleak circumstances and is tranquil due to complete trust in Allah.

This is the heart described by Allah Himself as the sound heart:

“The day on which property will not avail, nor sons, except him who comes to Allah with a sound heart.” (Qur’an, 26:88–89)

The Prophecy of the Holy Prophet Sallalaahu Alaihi wasallam about his passing away and Fathima radiallahu taala anhu being the first to join him from his family and also the Leader of the women in Jannah.

Narrated By Ummul Monineen Ayesha Siddiqa radiallahu taala anhu
Ayeshah (radiallhu taala anhu ) narrates, “Fatimah (radiallahu taala anhu) came
and her way of walking was just like that of the Holy Prophet (Sallalaahu Alaihi wasallam). The Holy Prophet  (Sallalaahu Alaihi wasallam). welcomed his beloved daughter and seated her on his right hand side or on the left hand side. Then he whispered something to her which made her cry. So I asked her why she was crying. Then the Holy Prophet  whispered something to her and she laughed. So I said, ‘I have never seen happiness so close to sadness as I have seen today.’ I asked (Fatimah [radiallahu taala anhu ] ), ‘What did the Holy Prophet  say?’ She replied, ‘I cannot disclose the secret of the Messenger of Allah .’ When the Holy Prophet  passed away I asked her again (about this incident)
and she replied, ‘The Holy Prophet  whispered to me, ‘Every year Jibraeel recites the whole of the Quran with me once but this year he has recited it twice. I am sure that the end of my time in this world has come and indeed you are the first from my family who will come to me.’ This made me cry. Then the Holy Prophet whispered, ‘Are you not happy with the fact that you are the leader of the women of Paradise or the leader of all Muslim women To this I laughed.’”

The Passing away of Fathima radiallahu taala anhu

Umm Salma (radiallahu taala anhu ) narrates, “When Fatimah (radiallahu taala anhu ) had the illness which took her life, I nursed her. During this time, on one occasion her condition was slightly better one morning. Ali ( radiallahu taala anhu ) had gone out for some job. Fatimah said, ‘O mother! Bring some water for me to bathe.’ I brought some water and as far as I saw she bathed perfectly. Then she said, ‘O mother, bring me new clothes’ so I gave her clothes to her and she put them on. Then she said, ‘O mother! Make my bed for me in the middle of the house,’ so I did accordingly. Then she laid down, faced towards the Kabah, placed her hand under her cheek and said, ‘O mother! It is time for my death and I
have purified myself . Do not let anybody undress me.’ Fatimah (radiallahu taala anhu ) passed away in that very position.”

Umm Salmah continues, “Then Ali (radiallahu taala anhu ) came back and I informed him of Fatimah’s (radiallahu taala anhu ) death.

Fasting on the 9th n 10th of Muharram
Via Dua's - Fortress Of The Muslims

Abu Qatada
رضي الله ﺗﻌﺎﻟﯽٰعنه relates that the Prophet صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ said:
The fast on the 10th of Muharram atones for the sins of the preceding year.
[Muslim]

'Abd-Allaah ibn ‘Abbaas
رضي الله ﺗﻌﺎﻟﯽٰعنه said: When the Messenger of Allah صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ fasted on the day of ‘Ashoora (10th of Muharram) and told the people to fast, they said,
“O Messenger of Allah
صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ, this is a day that is venerated by the Jews and Christians.”
Prophet
“Next year, if ALLAH (
سبحانه وتعالى) wills, we will fast on the ninth day.” But by the time the following year came, the Messenger of Allah
(Narrated by Muslim, 1916)

Shaikh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyah said: The Prophet
صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ forbade resembling the People of the Book in many ahadith.
For example, he said concerning ‘Ashoora’ (10th of Muharram):

“If I live until next year I will certainly fast the ninth.”
(Al-Fataawa al-Kubra, part 6)

Ibn Hajar Rahmatullah said,
commenting on the hadith
“If I live until next year I will certainly fast the ninth”:

His concern to fast the ninth may be understood as meaning that he would not limit himself to that, rather that he would add it to the tenth, either to be on the safe side, or to be different from the Jews and Christians, which is more likely to be correct; this is what may be understood from some of the reports narrated by Muslim.”
[From Fath al-Baari, 4/245]

Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him) said: "The noblest charity is that a Muslim acquires some knowledge (of the Deen) then imparts it to a brother Muslim." (Ibn Majah).
